Recent research has highlighted the importance of using effective instructional techniques consistently and frequently in the teaching of writing (AERO Report into Writing and Writing Instruction, 2022) It has also highlighted the need to explicitly teach structure to students, providing subject specific instruction as required.

Session 5 will cover:

  • The importance of developing a whole school approach to establish consistency in curriculum and the teaching of writing.
  • How to teach structure/genre- through modelling, guided practice and exemplars, focussing on informational and persuasive writing.
  • An introduction to the Conventions trait
  • Some tips on teaching students how to structure paragraphs from the Writing Revolution
  • Follow up and sharing of practice from previous session
  • An opportunity for reflection and celebration

This is the final of a series of 5 practical and interactive sessions that aim to support teachers and Literacy Leaders to build their capacity and pedagogical knowledge in the writing domain. Participants will be given the opportunity to share how their writing instruction has developed /been altered through participating in the course.
