Latest data signals continued growth for Independent Schools in Tasmania
Enrolment data for Tasmania indicate growing preference for Independent Schools, despite the overall decline in Tasmanian school student numbers and the pressures of COVID-19.
Figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show positive signs for Independent Schools in Tasmania.
The ABS Data shows an increase in Tasmanian independent student numbers from 9,969 in 2020 to 10,410 in 2021 (an increase of 441 or 4.4.%).
Simultaneously, Tasmania had the second lowest annual growth rate in student enrolments by state and territory (-0.3%) and the lowest population growth rate by state and territory (-0.2%).
Independent FTE enrolment share increased by 0.6% from 12.2% in 2020 to 12.8% in 2021.
The Primary FTE enrolment share increased by 0.5% from 10.1% in 2020 to 10.6% in 2021 and the secondary FTE enrolment share increased by 0.6% from 14.8% in 2020 to 15.4% in 2021.
In-school staff (FTE) increased by 6.6% for Independent Schools in Tasmania.
Independent Schools Tasmania (IST) Executive Director Tony Crehan said:
“Despite school student numbers falling in Tasmania, we saw a record increase of 4.4% in Tasmanian independent student enrolments in 2021 to 10,410″
The data shows long term trends in the rate of enrolment for Tasmanian Independent Schools
The data indicates an increasing rate of growth in enrolment in Tasmanian Independent Schools, from a 2.7% increase in 2020 to the 4.4% increase in 2021.
Tasmanian independent school five-year student FTE growth from 2016 to 2021 was 1,226 or 13.4%.
