How Secondary Teachers Can Improve Literacy in Their Classrooms
Overview
Current research has shown that using a Structured Literacy approach is the most effective and efficient way to teach children to read and write, but what does this look like in the secondary classroom? This highly practical session will focus on building teacher knowledge and practice in using a Structured Literacy Approach in Years 7-12
Content:
- Why Literacy is everyone's’ business?
- Explicit instruction & the Science of Reading – an overview.
- Strategies to build reading fluency.
- Robust vocabulary instruction.
- The importance of building background knowledge to support reading comprehension.
- Strategies to unpack a text with students.
- Combining reading and writing.
- Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, including screening and intervention.
