Overview
Current research has shown that using a Structured Literacy approach is the most effective and efficient way to teach children to read and write, but what does this look like in the upper primary grades? This highly practical session will focus on building teacher knowledge and practice in using a Structured Literacy Approach in Years 3-6.
Content:
- Evidence-based instructional methods that are critical for strong reading and writing development in Years 3-6.
- The structure of an upper primary literacy block.
- How Words Work: building your understanding of words including morphology and etymology.
- A simple routine for spelling instruction.
- Building Strong Sentences.
- A routine for daily, low variance syntax instruction.
- How to teach and assess comprehension through rich texts.
