Improving Future Writing Outcomes
In response to key findings from the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) report, ‘Writing development: What does a decade of NAPLAN data reveal?‘ IST’s consulting team will run a targeted series of professional learning sessions with a focus on writing.
At the centre of these sessions is an Action Research Writing Instruction Project. The objective of this project is to assist schools to develop a whole-school approach to improving writing outcomes, emphasising the importance of teaching writing through all learning areas.
Following many of the recommendations of the AERO report, the IST team have planned a series of systematic PL sessions to support teachers and Literacy Leaders to build their capacity and pedagogical knowledge in the writing domain. This professional learning program and action research project aims to build participants’ skills and awareness of the current evidence-based best practice and empower them to return to their context to upskill and train others in writing instruction. After each session, participants will go back to their schools with an action plan designed to support teachers to set goals and embed their new knowledge into practice. They will also participate in a termly ‘community of practice’ webinar to discuss their experiences, report on progress, and share ideas.
